The ruling Awami League has announced plans to prevent any conspiracy and disorder by the BNP-Jamaat alliance by facing them on the streets until the next parliamentary election.
Attending rallies at different parts of Dhaka in response to the BNP's mass procession program on Friday, senior Awami League leaders said they would not sit idle if the opposition activists wanted to create any anarchy in the name of an anti-government movement.
Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader spoke at a sit-in program in front of the party's central office, joining it virtually on Friday afternoon.
Uttering a stern warning to BNP-Jamaat, he said: “We are in power. We will not be aggressors, but if they attack us, there will be no concessions on the streets. We are in the field…we will be in the field until the election.”
He added that the Awami League must be kept in power to save Bangladesh and continue development.
Quader also addressed a rally at Shyamoli where he said the BNP would not be able to repair the state because they resort to evil politics.
"BNP killed the country's democracy and destroyed the state. They have announced that they will repair the state. How will they do it? Rather, they will destroy the state," he said.
The minister also criticised the civil society representatives who have issued a statement demanding the release of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who was arrested on charge of conspiracy to carry out sabotage ahead of the December 10 rally.
Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud said the BNP was trying to wage a simultaneous movement with signboard parties.
“Sometimes, the BNP alliance has 20 parties, and sometimes 12 parties. Now they are saying that the alliance has 33 parties," he told the Awami League's sit-in program at Bangabandhu Avenue.
He added that the people of Dhaka were terrified as the BNP observed its mass procession program.
