Former housing and public works minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, a freedom fighter and presidium member of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, has died. He was 83.
He breathed his last at Square Hospital in Dhaka at around 10am on Wednesday, family sources said.
Mosharraf had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for the past few weeks due to old age complications. He was later put on life support after his condition deteriorated.
Born on January 12, 1943, in Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong, Mosharraf was a former lawmaker from Chittagong-1.
He was elected to parliament from the constituency as an Awami League candidate in 1973, 1986, 1996, 2008, 2014 and 2018.
He served as minister for housing and public works and as minister for civil aviation and tourism at different times.
Mosharraf was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch in the Bashundhara residential area on October 27, 2024.
He fell seriously ill due to old age complications on August 5, 2025, while in jail custody and was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University from the prison hospital. He was later released on bail while undergoing treatment there.
Information regarding his namaz-e-janaza was not immediately available.
