The BNP has decided not to bring out a pre-announced mass rally on December 24 as the ruling Awami League's national council is scheduled to be held that day.
The decision was taken in a standing committee meeting on Monday, reported Bangla Tribune, after talking to several BNP leaders on Tuesday.
Earlier, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday urged the BNP not to bring out its mass procession in Dhaka on December 24.
“Please withdraw the mass procession program on December 24 as our national council is on the same day. Do not incite conflict,” he said.
Several members of the BNP standing committee said the party may move the mass procession program forward to December 22 or postpone it.
The media will be informed about the new date of the procession, said BNP Organizational Secretary Emran Saleh Prince.
Ganatantra Mancha and other leftist parties were supposed to simultaneously participate in the procession program.
The Jamaat-e-Islami was supposed to hold a mass rally on December 24 as well.
