Update : 07 Feb 2021, 06:57 PM

Dr Reza Kibria, general secretary of Gono Forum, resigned from both the post and the party on Sunday.

A press release signed by the politician himself cited personal reasons for the resignation.

Dr Reza will continue to cooperate with those who are working to establish democracy, social justice, and good governance in Bangladesh, the press release added.

"I have resigned from the post of Gono Forum general secretary and withdrawn from the party. My resignation letter has been submitted to Dr Kamal Hossain, president of the party," read the press release.

“A press briefing will be held soon to reveal the reasons behind my resignation,” Kibria told Dhaka Tribune later in the day.

Kibria also expressed his gratitude to Dr Kamal Hossain and members of the Gono Forum for giving him the chance to serve as the general secretary of the party.

Dr Reza, son of former Awami League finance minister Shah AMS Kibria, joined Jatiya Oikya Front before the parliamentary polls on December 30, 2018, to contest Habiganj 1 constituency.

On May 5, 2019, he was made general secretary of Gono Forum.
