In 1996, the party came to power again under Hasina’s leadership and ruled the country until 2001. In 2008, Awami League again achieved a landslide victory in the parliamentary polls and it also won the 10th parliamentary elections on January 5 in 2014, which were boycotted by the main BNP opposition party.The ruling Awami League will celebrate its 68th founding anniversary today.
On this day in 1949, the party was formed as East Pakistan Awami Muslim League at the historic Rose Garden in Old Dhaka. Later, the word ‘Muslim’ was dropped from the party’s name with an aim to incorporate secularism into its ideology.
To observe the day, the Awami League has chalked out elaborate programmes including the hoisting of the national and party flags atop its offices across the country.
At 9am, wreaths will be laid at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi in Dhaka and also at his grave in Tungipara of Gopalganj at the same time.
