Chhatra League celebrates its 72nd founding anniversary

Chhatra League organized a reunion program at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday afternoon

Bangladesh Chhatra League, the largest student organization having glorious history of struggle and success, has celebrated its 72nd founding anniversary through elaborate programs.

The historic organization came into being on January 4 in 1948 at the instruction of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with an aim to attaining the country's independence, reports BSS.

The three-day long celebration commenced with hoisting of national and party flags at party offices at 6:30am on Saturday and placing of wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi Road 32 in Dhaka at 7am.

After cutting a cake at Dhaka University (DU) Curzon Hall around 8am, Chhatra League organized a reunion program around 2:30pm at Suhrawardy Udyan with presence of Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina as the chief guest.

Former Chhatra League presidents and general secretaries including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader took part in the reunion program, conducted by Chhatra League Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee with its President Al-Nahean Khan Joy in the chair.

The three-day long celebration programs also included a voluntary blood donation campaign to be held on January 6 around 10am at Bottola beside Aparajeyo Bangla on DU campus, while educational materials would be distributed among students on January 7 at 10am.

Marking the anniversary, winter clothes will also be distributed among the impoverished people on January 7 at 4pm in front of Swoparjito Swadhinota Sculpture at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).

Earlier, on Friday night all DU hall units of Chhatra League held colourful rallies on the campus.

After placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, Chhatra League President Al-Nahean Khan Joy said Chhatra League will not be the sanctuary of any disobedient or disorderly people. 

"We are working with an aim to find quality leadership of Chhatra League across the country," he said.

Chhatra League General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee said only those who are doing organization bearing the ideology of Bangabandhu and maintaining the constitution will be evaluated.

Chhatra League men will be well-mannered as per the instruction of the premier, said Joy while speaking in the reunion at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday. 

The Bangladesh Chhatra League played pioneering roles in the language movement in 1952, in the victory of Jukta Front in 1954 polls, anti-Ayub movement in 1958, education movement in 1962, six-point movement in 1966, mass upsurge in 1969, elections in 1970, the great Liberation War in 1971, rehabilitation activities in post-war Bangladesh, movement for restoration of democracy after 1975 changeover, student movement in 1983 and anti-autocratic movement in 1990.

Now the organization is working relentlessly for building a digital Bangladesh.
