He made the comment after inspecting the Suhrawardy Udyan ahead of a grand rally

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has advised the ruling-party-led alliance members to become the opposition, due to political circumstances.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, suggested this in front of reporters at the Suhrawardy Udyan, in Dhaka, on Thursday. He was visiting the venue to inspect preparations for an Awami League grand rally scheduled for January 19.

After conducting an inspection, he said: “Considering political circumstances, member parties of the Awami League-led 14-Party Alliance are better off as opposition.

“Lawmakers belonging to alliance parties should act as strong opposition to the ruling party, by offering constructive criticism. This move will further ensure good governance, by pointing out the government’s mistakes and offering ways to correct them.”

He furthered: “The 14-Party Alliance is an ideological alliance. Our alliance with Jatiya Party is a strategic move, and comes into effect during polls. We will decide what role the alliance party lawmakers will play through discussion.”

Quader also firmly stated that the alliance is not suffering from internal tension.

The minister said: “BNP, though defeated, is acting recklessly. The government will act patiently, as the people elected Awami League by a landslide. The ruling party has a huge responsibility towards the people, so it will not do anything that can cause problems.”

Labeling the Oikya Front leaders as reckless and dangerous, Obaidul Quader said: “Following their defeat in the recently-held 11th general election, Oikya Front is considering being dismantled.”

The ruling party general secretary expressed optimism that the Awami League grand rally scheduled for January 19, at the Suhrawardy Udyan, will overwhelmingly be supported by the public; who elected the government by a landslide in the polls.
