Three villages in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur have been without electricity since 4:00 pm on Wednesday after nor’wester and heavy rain damaged power transmission lines in Kawraid union. As of 4:00 pm on Friday, electricity had not been restored, leaving residents in severe hardship.
The affected villages—Goldapara, Hoydebpur, and Jahangirpur—have around 4,000 to 4,500 electricity consumers. The prolonged outage has caused particular distress for elderly residents, children, and SSC examinees, while internet services have also been disrupted. Despite repeated appeals to the local rural electrification office, residents say no effective action has been taken.
Shantanu Roy, Deputy General Manager of the Mawna Zonal Office under Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samity-2, said the affected areas receive electricity from two stations under different offices. He confirmed that storms disrupted supply to the three villages.
Residents reported that strong winds toppled electric poles and damaged transformers, leading to the outage. Even after 48 hours, repair work had not been completed.
Sekandar Ali, a resident of Goldapara, said many mobile phones have run out of charge due to the lack of electricity. “Food stored in refrigerators is spoiling. Previously, we could pay to charge phones using generators, but now there is no electricity and no diesel, so generators cannot run,” he said.
A housewife from Hoydebpur, Ajufa Begum, said they are struggling to access clean water. “We cannot use submersible pumps, so we are collecting water from ponds and boiling it for drinking. Some people are bringing water from distant tube wells,” she said.
Local school teacher Abu Zakaria Pintu described the situation as unbearable. “Life without electricity has become extremely difficult. No fans, no refrigeration, no communication—mobile networks and internet are down. We are living in complete darkness,” he said.
Monirul Islam, Acting Assistant General Manager of the Kawraid Sub-Zonal Office, acknowledged the damage caused by the storm. He said several poles were tilted or broken, wires snapped, and electrical equipment damaged. “Power supply will be restored once repair work is completed. We hope to resolve the issue quickly,” he said.
