A child and a teenage girl with speech and hearing impairment drowned in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Friday.
The incidents occurred Friday afternoon in Nagar Hawla and South Dhanuya villages under Gazipur Union.
The deceased are Jihad (6), son of Zakir Hossain from Nagar Hawla village and a kindergarten student at Nagar Hawla Government Primary School, and Sweety (14), daughter of Rafiqul Islam from Sakhua village of Trishal upazila in Mymensingh. Sweety had been living with her parents in a rented house in South Dhanuya village.
Locals said that around 12:00 pm, Jihad went to play near a pond adjacent to his home. Family members noticed his shoes by the pond, raising suspicion. With the help of locals, the child was rescued from the pond and taken to Jaina Bazar Al Baraka Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead.
In another incident at the same time in South Dhanuya village, Sweety entered a pond with friends for bathing. While trying to save another child accompanying her, she herself went underwater and drowned. A local farmer later recovered her body from the pond after a prolonged search.
