Waterlogging strands 200 families, posing health risks in Sreepur

UNO Nahid Bhuiyan said immediate steps are being taken to drain the stagnant water

Over 200 families are currently stranded due to severe waterlogging following heavy rainfall in West Bagmara (Collegepara) area under Sreepur Municipality of Gazipur.

The area remained submerged in waist-deep water from 3:30 am to 9:30 am, disrupting movement and daily activities of residents.

Member of Parliament SM Rafiqul Islam Bachchu visited the affected area along with the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO), Municipality Administrator Nahid Bhuiyan, and Chief Engineer Shahed Akhter. During the visit, he instructed officials to take immediate action to resolve the waterlogging.

Residents said the problem has persisted for nearly four years and worsens during the monsoon. Even light rainfall often causes water to overflow into homes and courtyards.

Local resident Jewel Mia said daily activities become extremely difficult, as people are forced to walk through dirty, foul-smelling water. Children and elderly residents are increasingly suffering from waterborne diseases.

Housewife Rokeya Begum said repeated appeals to local authorities have failed to bring any lasting solution. “We have been living in these conditions for years,” she said.

Another resident, Zulfiqar, said families were unable to cook due to flooded kitchens. “We have been without food since morning. Students are unable to attend school due to the water,” he added.

Municipal Chief Engineer Shahed Akhter said temporary drainage measures are being arranged, with work expected to begin soon. He also noted that illegal blockages of drains and culverts have contributed to the problem.

UNO Nahid Bhuiyan said immediate steps are being taken to drain the stagnant water. He added that a permanent paved drainage system will be constructed once water levels recede to prevent future waterlogging.
