The blockade began around 8:30am

Angry students and locals set three buses on fire in Jhenaidah after a youth was allegedly beaten to death by employees of a petrol pump.

In protest, transport workers later blocked the road at the district’s central bus terminal on Sunday morning.

The blockade began around 8:30am, halting traffic on the Jhenaidah–Magura Highway and causing long tailbacks on both sides of the road. Passengers suffered due to the disruption.

Transport workers later withdrew the blockade after about two hours following assurances that those involved in setting the buses on fire would be arrested.

The unrest followed the killing of Nirab Hossain, who was allegedly beaten by employees of the Taj Filling Station in the city on Saturday evening.

Later at night, protesters vandalized a petrol pump in the Arappur area and set three buses on fire at the central bus terminal around 1am. The attack was allegedly carried out by members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Mahfuz Hossain said those responsible for the arson attack would be identified and brought to justice.

“After giving assurances to the workers, the road was cleared and traffic resumed,” he added.
