GMP restricts public entry to Bishwa Ijtema ground after fatal clash

Legal action will be taken against those who violate these restrictions

Update : 18 Dec 2024, 05:59 PM

The Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has issued a public notice declaring the entry of the general public into the Ijtema ground and surrounding areas restricted, following clashes over control of the Tongi Bishwa Ijtema venue that left two dead.

The directive, signed by GMP Commissioner Md Nazmul Karim Khan, came on Wednesday after the violent clashes between Maulana Zubair and Maulana Saad factions of the Tabligh Jamaat earlier in the day.

The notice specifies that starting from 2pm, the public is prohibited from entering the Ijtema ground and its surroundings within a 3km radius.

The notice further outlines restrictions on gatherings, protests and the carrying of weapons, sharp objects, sticks, explosives or similar materials.

The use of loudspeakers or similar devices to produce loud sounds is also forbidden.

Legal action will be taken against those who violate these restrictions.

In response to the unrest, heightened security measures have been put in place.

The two who died in the clashes were Bachchu Mia, 70, hailing from Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj, and Belal Hossain, 60, from Dakshinkhan in Dhaka.

Many others also sustained injuries during the confrontation.
