In a room draped in white mourning cloth, a woman weeps and her three children sit at the door, surrounded by family members in the house, but missing Kamal Hossain, the son of Idu Mia from Jolai Kuriyapara village in Comilla's Sadar Dakhshin upazila.
Kamal was shot and killed by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the border on Monday.
Afterward, the BSF took his body, returning it 27 hours later on Tuesday night.
Kamal’s wife, Johra Begum, raised a poignant question: “If my husband was guilty, then there is law. Why did they have to shoot him? He should have been arrested or handed over to the police. Even if it took years, our children would have had their father. I wouldn’t be a widow now. But they killed my husband. I demand justice!”
Kamal’s neighbour, Montaz Mia, recounted that on Monday evening, a man named Laden Kamal forcefully took Kamal and two others to the border. Afterward, the BSF shot at them, resulting in Kamal's immediate death, while the other two managed to escape.
Kamal’s daughter, Kamrun Nahar Jahan Shanta, said: “My father was taken to the border by force. The other two returned, but why didn’t my father come back? Our house is only two and a half kilometers from the border, while the Bahadpur border is five kilometers away. If my father had wanted to go, he would have gone through the path near our house. Why would he go so far?”
She added: “If my father did something wrong, there is law in the country. They can’t just shoot someone without any due process. What kind of justice is this? We demand justice!”
The commander of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Lieutenant Colonel Iftekhar Hossain of Battalion-10, stated: “The body has been handed over to the family. We are investigating the matter.”
Kamal Hossain, 33, was killed by the Indian Border Security Force.
The incident occurred at the Bahadpur border in Comilla’s South Sadar around 6pm on Monday.
Locals reported that Kamal used to run his livelihood by breaking open ant nests to sell their eggs.
