Jamaat-e-Islami did not get permission to hold a public rally in Sylhet city on Saturday.

The rally was not allowed due to the fear of vandalism. Legal action will be taken if they still try to gather, said police.

Jamaat leaders said that the people of Sylhet are surprised and shocked because the administration did not give them permission to organize a peaceful public rally on Saturday. This has proved that there is no such thing as democracy and rule of law in the country.

Jamaat sent a letter to the city police on July 5, seeking permission for a divisional rally in Sylhet for 10-point demands, including the release of Amir and other leaders and activists, for elections under a non-partisan government.

It was decided to gather at the registry ground of the city on Saturday.

They also carried out campaigns extensively for the success of the rally.

But the police arrested seven leaders and workers of the party from that field on Friday. They were arrested around 11pm. However, no case was filed against them.

The Jamaat leaders complained that the police arrested these seven people while returning after visiting the registry ground of the public meeting. There was no case or court warrant against the detainees.

Confirming the matter at 8pm, Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Ali Mahmud said that the police are investigating whether the detainees are involved in any sabotage.

Necessary measures will be taken after inquiry about the detainees, said the OC.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Elias Sharif said that there is a danger of vandalism in the gathering of Jamaat, so permission will not be given.

It has been reported to them. However, legal action will be taken if assembly is held without permission. We have all kinds of preparations.

Meanwhile, the Mahanagar Jamaat has called a press conference at 12 noon on Saturday regarding the pre-scheduled public meeting.

Mahanagar Jamaat Amir Muhammad Fakhrul Islam, Deputy Amir Maulana Sohail Ahmad and Secretary Mohammad Shahjahan Ali said in a press release that Mahanagar Jamaat will present details through the press conference.
