A teenage girl has reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her home in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi after failing to clear her SSC exams.
She had been a humanities student at the local Al Haj Bazlul Haque JM High School, her cousin, Jewel Miah, told Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday.
The results for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and its equivalent exams were published on Monday, and when the 15-year-old went to her school with her friends she came to know that she had failed in Math and English Second Paper.
She shared her sorrow with her elder sister over the phone later that night.
When the latter came to her parents' home from her in-laws' on Tuesday, she saw that the door to her younger sister's room was locked from inside.
Her family feared the worst and broke down the door with the help of their neighbours and saw the teenager hanging from the ceiling fan in the room.
The police later came to know about the incident from locals and recovered the body.
Liza Akter, a friend of the deceased, said: “All of us urged her to have her results reviewed… but she committed suicide before the process even started.”
Raipura police station SI Nasir Uddin said the police would take legal action after talking with the family of the deceased.
