A woman has committed suicide in Jamalpur after her husband was allegedly taken to a village arbitration and assaulted on suspicion of cattle theft, according to police.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon in Khalilhata village under Kendua union. The deceased, Jochona Banu, 50, was the wife of Surujjaman, a resident of the area.

Police said that an attempt was made to steal cattle from the house of a ward member, Nayeb Ali, at around 2:00am on Wednesday. Following the incident, Nayeb Ali along with several others went to Surujjaman’s house to detain his son, Sujan Mia, on suspicion of involvement.

As Sujan was not at home, the group allegedly took Surujjaman to Nayeb Ali’s residence. A village arbitration was held on Thursday, where Surujjaman and two others—Tota Mia and Sohel Rana—were reportedly assaulted over the theft suspicion.

After returning home from the arbitration, Jochona Banu committed suicide by hanging, reportedly unable to bear the humiliation and emotional distress.

Ward member Nayeb Ali denied the allegation of assault.

Officer-in-Charge of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station, Md Mizanur Rahman, said police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for an autopsy.
