Army sets up camps to repair flood-hit roads in Sylhet

The army is also distributing relief and providing medical assistance among flood-affected victims

The Bangladesh Army has set up four temporary camps to repair flood-damaged roads in Sylhet and Sunamganj.

Meanwhile, the army has expanded its operations to three more upazilas–Beanibazar, Golapganj and Dharmapasha upazilas–in the two districts, taking the total number to 23 upazilas.

A press release from the 17th Infantry Division said that most of the roads in both districts have been severely damaged due to heavy rains and floods. 

Realizing the issue, the army has taken steps to activate several roads on its own initiative. As part of this, four roads in two districts have been repaired by setting up four temporary camps since Monday.

The roads are– Darbast-Kanaighat in Sylhet district and Sadar-Tahirpur, Sadar-Jamalganj and Sadar-Dirai roads in Sunamganj district.

Maj Gen Hamidul Haque, area commander of the 17th Infantry Division, visited two army camps at Fenchuganj and Dakshin Surma upazila in Sylhet on Tuesday and distributed relief to flood victims in the two areas, the release said.

According to the release, since June 17, the army have been deployed in 20 upazilas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts under the supervision of 17th Infantry Division as per the direction of the chief of the army to assist the civil administration.

In addition, the army medical team have been providing medical assistance as well as emergency transfer of endangered patients from remote areas of both the districts to the District Sadar Hospital.

"Until the flood situation improves and the civilian administration comes under control, the army will distribute relief goods through various channels, provide drinking water, free medical care, repair damaged roads and gates, and keep power plants operational," the statement added.

Meanwhile, 319 more people have contracted diarrhea in Sylhet division in the last 24 hours.

On Tuesday, the Surma and Kushiyara rivers also crossed the danger line at four points while a child and an old man died in the flood waters.
