Netrokona flood leaves 200,000 people marooned

Homes, shops, educational institutions, government and non-government offices flooded

Various areas of Netrokona’s Kalmakanda, Durgapur and Barhatta upazilas have been inundated due to downpours and downhill onrush of water.

The situation in Kalmakanda upazila is the worst, as of Friday. Roads, houses and educational institutions of more than three hundred villages of eight unions of the upazila have been flooded. About 200,000 people have been stranded.

According to district administration sources and locals, after Kalmakanda Sadar upazila the situation is worst in Barakhapan, Pogla, Kharnai, Lengura, Nazirpur and Rangchati unions.

Besides, houses, shops, educational institutions, government and non-government offices in Kullagarh, Gaokandia union including Durgapur upazila have been flooded.

Road communication between almost all the unions and the two upazilas has been cut off. Several educational institutions have been opened to be used as shelters.

According to Netrokona Water Development Board sources, heavy rain and onrush of hill water are increasing the water levels of all rivers in Netrokona including Kangs, Maheshwari, Dhanu and Ubdakhali.

Deputy Commissioner Anjana Khan Majlish said the upazila administration had made preparations to deal with the flood situation.

Meanwhile, 20 tons of rice and Tk2 lakh in cash have been allocated for each flood-hit upazila. Relief activities including distribution of dry food among the flood victims will continue.
