Police have detained two people in connection with assaulting a presiding officer at a polling station at Mograpara Union Parishad under Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj.
The incident took place at the Panchpir Dargah Government Primary School centre on Wednesday evening.
Fakhrul Islam, presiding officer of the polling station, was later rescued and shifted to the upazila health complex.
According to police and locals, two separate polling stations have been set up at Panchpir Dargah Government Primary School for men and women in Ward 7. After the election, the presiding officer declared the result of both of the centres while the defeated candidates and their supporters alleged that only the results of the male centre were handed over.
At one point, defeated UP member candidate Abu Taher, Al Mahbub and Rafiqul Islam Dulal and their supporters became excited and attacked the presiding officer.
The supporters of the defeated candidates also threw brickbats at police when the police went to the spot and tried to control the situation.
Police later brought the situation under control by charging baton and firing blank shots. At least 10 people were injured in the incident.
Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonargaon Police Station, said that two people were detained in connection with the incident. However, no case has been filed yet.
Upazila Election Officer Yusuf Ur Rahman said legal action will be taken in this regard.
