Heavy rain and onrush water from the hills over the last four days have inundated five upzilas in Sylhet, causing waterlogging in the metropolis as well.
The locals are experiencing immediate hardships since they cannot commute anywhere due to the flooding.
Various areas of Sylhet Sadar, Companiganj, Gowainghat, Jaintapur and Kanaighat upazilas have been inundated due to hill slopes and rains. The residents of 50 villages have been marooned while the road communications were snapped due to flash floods.
Several rivers including Surma, Sari, Piyain, and Dholai rivers are flowing at high speeds and at points exceeding the danger level. A vast track of Boro paddy field was submerged due to the flash flood.
Meanwhile, the District Administration has allocated 79 tons of rice for the flood-affected people in the five upazilas.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Mozibor Rahman said the upazila nirbahi officers have also been directed to take necessary steps in this regard.
Meanwhile, Apurba Pal, 27, a field worker of an NGO died in Golapganj on Friday night following a hill slide. His brother Pappu Rudra Pal, 25, was injured during the incident.
Several other people also were injured in different places over the district.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Mojibar Rahman said cash assistance of Tk20,000 has been allocated for the family of the slain Apurdra Pal.
