Thousands of people in Sylhet and Sunamganj are waiting for food aid and for rescue from floodwaters. But their rescue has become costly due to excessive boat fares at a time when people are in dire need of help.
The boat fare, which is usually Tk20, was being charged Tk1500. Even then, boats are hard to find.
Relatives and well-wishers of the flood-affected people are desperately searching for boats as they remain the only means of communication in the deteriorating flood situation there.
Apart from hundreds of passenger boats, small engine-run boats were also seen carrying people on Saturday.
The situation became grim after the authorities suspended the movement of trains to and from Sylhet railway station as its platform went underwater on Saturday.
Now trains will run from Maizgaon railway station in Fenchuganj, which is 20km from Sylhet.
Travel to and from Sylhet became more difficult after flight operations at Osmani International Airport were suspended due to the floodwaters approaching the runway a day before.
