A record number of motorcycles crossed Bangabandhu Bridge on the Jamuna River till Saturday morning ahead of the Eid holidays.
In the 24 hours till Saturday morning, about 8,000 motorcycles had crossed the bridge through the east and west toll plazas of the bridge, according to Ahsan Masud Bappi, executive engineer of the Bangabandhu Bridge site office on Saturday.
People have been going to their destinations, including ancestral homes, on motorcycles and public transport. Most motorcyclists have been returning home with their spouses and children on motorcycles. In the last 24 hours, 7,959 motorcycles crossed the Bangabandhu Bridge.
Besides, 42,199 vehicles, including freight and public transport, have crossed the bridge. The toll collection from the bridge is taka three crores 18 lakh and eight thousand.
Two temporary toll booths have been set up on the south side of the toll plaza of the bridge along the road to Motorcycle Guards. Motorcyclists have been crossing the toll there.
Tangail Superintendent (SI) of Police Mohammad Kaiser said: “There is a lot of traffic on the road without traffic jams so people are able to reach their destinations in comfort for the Eid celebrations.”
