Erosion by the Jamuna River in Sonatala upazila of Bogra has put at least six villages at risk, forcing several hundred families to leave their homes as panic spreads among people.

Driven by heavy rainfall and strong upstream currents, the swelling Jamuna has created strong waves and whirlpools that are rapidly devouring vast stretches of land in Tekani Chukainagar union. Villages, including Dauriarpara, Mahabbater Para, Jontiar Para, Khabulia and Bhikoner Para, are now facing the threat of disappearing entirely if urgent measures are not taken.

Hundreds of residents on Friday formed a human chain along the riverbank, demanding immediate government intervention. Protesters appealed to the local Member of Parliament and the Prime Minister to take swift action to stop the erosion and protect vulnerable communities.

According to local residents, more than 100 houses have already been relocated to safer areas, while dozens of homes, trees and large sections of cropland have been swallowed by the river over the past few days. Fear and uncertainty now dominate daily life for thousands living near the embankment.

Residents say the erosion is not only destroying homes and farmland but also threatening schools, mosques, madrasas and local marketplaces. Their demand is clear: not temporary relief, but a permanent embankment strong enough to withstand the Jamuna’s fury.

Speaking at the protest, Union Chairman Zahidul Islam said authorities had contacted the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), but no effective response had yet been received. He warned that without emergency dumping of geo-bags along vulnerable points, the situation could worsen rapidly.
