Bangladesh pulled off a landmark victory in Darwin, beating Australia on their own soil for the first time in Test cricket

Bangladesh produced one of the greatest upsets in Test cricket history, completing a stunning nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin on Sunday to secure their first-ever Test win on Australian soil.

Chasing just 57 after Australia were bowled out for 284 in their second innings, Bangladesh reached 53 for 1 in 14.2 overs to seal a historic triumph and take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.

The victory was the culmination of an extraordinary four days in which Bangladesh dominated all 11 sessions of play, outclassing Australia with bat, ball and in the field.

Australia, despite fielding their strongest available side, were unable to wrest control of the contest at any stage.

Bangladesh had already made history in the first innings when Hasan Mahmud's career-best 6-55 helped bowl Australia out for 198 on the opening day. The visitors then put the hosts under relentless pressure with the bat, reaching 426 after 138 overs of resistance in Darwin's heat and humidity.

Tanzid Hasan led the charge with a maiden Test century, becoming the first Bangladesh batter to score a Test hundred in Australia. Najmul Hossain Shanto added 84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz made 65 as Bangladesh established a commanding 228-run first-innings lead.

Australia needed a monumental response in their second innings, but Bangladesh's bowlers continued to dictate terms.

Resuming Sunday at 161 for 4, Australia were still 67 runs behind and desperately needed Cameron Green to produce something special. Green did just that, scoring a magnificent 104 off 201 balls, but received little meaningful support from the other end.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the architect of Australia's collapse. He removed Alex Carey for 30 before dismissing Beau Webster and captain Pat Cummins in quick succession to reduce Australia to 207 for 7, leaving the hosts just 21 runs ahead of avoiding an innings defeat.

Green and Mitchell Starc briefly extended Australia's lead before Hasan Mahmud finally ended the centurion's resistance, bowling him for 104. Green's dismissal effectively ended Australia's hopes of setting Bangladesh a challenging target.

Hasan finished with 3-56 in the second innings and nine wickets in the match, while Miraz completed a superb five-wicket haul by removing Nathan Lyon for 15 to wrap up the innings.

Australia's 284 left Bangladesh requiring only 57, but the chase began with a brief scare when Josh Hazlewood dismissed Tanzid in the second over.

There was to be no further drama.

Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam calmly dismantled Australia's remaining hopes, combining to take Bangladesh to victory. Mominul struck the winning boundary through backward point to complete an emphatic triumph.

For Bangladesh, the victory marked a watershed moment in their Test history. For Australia, it was a stunning reversal against a side that had arrived in Darwin as overwhelming underdogs.

Just days after Bangladesh suffered a heavy defeat against a Cricket Australia XI and were bowled out for 54 in their second innings, they produced a performance of remarkable resilience and quality against Australia's best.

The nine-wicket victory not only ended Bangladesh's long wait for a Test win in Australia but also established the Tigers as the first side in this series to break through Down Under.

With the second Test scheduled to begin in Mackay on August 22, Bangladesh now have the opportunity to complete a rare series clean sweep.
