Bangladesh secured a historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in the first Test in Darwin on Sunday, completing one of the greatest wins in the country’s Test history.
Chasing 57 runs for victory after Australia were bowled out for 284 in their second innings, Bangladesh reached 57-1 in just 14.2 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 30, while Shadman Islam scored 25 as the Tigers completed the chase in emphatic fashion. Tanzid Hasan was the only Bangladesh batter dismissed, falling for a duck.
Australia's second innings had been built around a fighting century from Cameron Green, who scored 104 to help the hosts avoid an innings defeat and give themselves a chance of saving the Test.
Hasan Mahmud eventually dismissed Green for 104 before Bangladesh quickly wrapped up the innings. Mehedi Hasan Miraz claimed his fifth wicket by dismissing Nathan Lyon, finishing with 5-66. Hasan took 3-56, while Taskin Ahmed claimed one wicket.
Bangladesh had earlier bowled Australia out for just 198 on the opening day, with Hasan producing a career-best six-wicket haul. The Tigers then piled up 426 in their first innings, with Tanzid Hasan scoring his maiden Test century.
The victory is Bangladesh's first Test win in Australia and comes 23 years after their previous Test match on Australian soil. The Tigers had also arrived in Darwin as overwhelming underdogs after being bowled out for 54 by a Cricket Australia XI in their warm-up match.
Instead, Bangladesh produced a remarkable all-round performance across five days to complete a landmark victory Down Under.
The result gives Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the two-match series and ensures they cannot lose the series.
