Twenty-five people were injured, including 15 who sustained gunshot wounds, in a clash between supporters of an elected chairman and a defeated candidate in Gopalganj.
The incident took place in Chandradighalia village of Shuktail union under Gopalganj Sadar upazila around 6am on Tuesday.
Several houses were attacked and vandalized at the time.
One of the injured, 25-year-old Mithun Mollah, was taken to Dhaka in critical condition.
The others received treatment at different local hospitals.
Police and locals said an altercation had taken place in the area between supporters of Chairman Rana Mollah and defeated candidate Sheikh Abed Ali, leading to the armed clash on Tuesday.
Upon receiving the news, police arrived at the spot at around 7am and brought the situation under control.
Bichitra Kumar Biswas, a doctor at the emergency department of Gopalganj General Hospital, said 13 people injured in the clash were undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Masud Mollah, a supporter of Rana Mollah, who was admitted to the hospital, alleged that supporters of Sheikh Abed Ali had opened fire on them.
Former chairman Sheikh Abed Ali said Rana started factionalism ever since becoming chairman of the union.
When contacted, Rana declined to comment over phone and said he would talk to reporters later.
Gopalganj Sadar police station OC Sheetol Chandra Pal said the incident was being investigated, adding that additional forces had been deployed to maintain law and order.
