Mystery shrouds death of 65-year-old in Tangail

Family claims of death in post-polls violence, locals claim he died of natural causes

The recent death of a sexagenarian has caused quite a stir in the neighbourhood of Balia Uttarpara in Tangail’s Basail upazila.

The family of the deceased Helal Mia, 65, claims that he died early on Saturday after an incident of post-polls violence, while some locals say he died of natural causes.

According to the family, member candidate Jamal Uddin, after losing the election to ward No 1 of Fulki union parishad on January 5, launched an attack one some houses on Friday, including Helal’s, as they had allegedly not voted for him.

“Following his defeat, Jamal’s men attacked our house and beat up my parents. My father died because of that thrashing,” Mamun Mia, the deceased’s son, told Dhaka Tribune.

Meanwhile, some locals claimed that Helal had been suffering from age-related complications for some time and even suffered a stroke not long ago.

Former UP member Nurul Islam acknowledged that the defeated candidate’s supporters had indeed vandalized some homes, but said he had heard about Helal being ill for a while.

Police are now waiting for an autopsy report to determine the cause of death.

“A case was filed over the attacks on Friday. We have recovered the body and will send it for autopsy due to the family’s complaint,” said Basail police station OC Harunur Rashid.
