Two people were killed and at least 20 others injured during a clash between the supporters of the chairman-elect and former chairman of Bashgari Union Parishad (UP) in Narsingdi on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Rubel Mia, 26 and Mamun Mia, 30.
The incident took place at Amtali boat terminal in the Raipura Upazila in the morning, said Inspector Ataur Rahman of Raipura police station.
According to locals, supporters of former UP Chairman Kazi Ashraful Haque had to remain away from the locality for two months after the election due to conflicts with the chairman-elect Zakir Hasan Ratul.
As some supporters of Ashraful tried to enter the area on Sunday, a clash started with the supporters of Zakir where both parties attacked with spears and fired bullets at each other.
Rubel died on the spot after being hit by a bullet on the head and Mamun succumbed to his injuries at Bancharampur Upazila Health Complex later said the inspector.
Others injured in the clash are currently being treated at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and other local hospitals, he said.
Another man’s death was reported but could not be confirmed yet, he added.
