Union Parishad (UP) chairman-elect and a defeated candidate and six others were arrested on Thursday over post-polls violence in Satkhira.

They were picked up from different areas under Gadaipur and Khajra unions late on Thursday, said police.

Earlier, chairman-elect Shahnewaz Dalim filed a case against 18 people, including his rival Ohidul Islam, said Officer-in-Charge of Assasuni police Golam Kabir

On the other hand, Ohidul's chief election agent, former chairman Ruhul Quddus, filed a case against 15 people, including Dalim.

The arrestees were sent to jail through Satkhira court on Friday afternoon, added the OC.

The others arrestees include Ruhul Quddus, Golam Mostafa, Mostakin Mollah and Golam Rabbi.

The violence broke out in Khajra Union on Thursday morning, a day after the election, where Dalim and his associates were shot at by defeated rival candidate Ohidul from his house while they were passing by.

Four people sustained gunshots and at least 15 were injured.

The agitated crowd then started throwing brickbats at Ohidul's house before the police took control of the situation.

However, denying the accusations, Ohidul said that he was forced to shoot in self-defense as his house was being attacked by Dalim's activists and supporters.
