The authorities have formed a three-member committee to determine the reason behind the gas cylinder blast on Thursday that left over 50 people including 15 children injured at Nangalkot of Comilla.
The probe body members are Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Ashraful Huq, Nangalkot police Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Rakibul Islam and a representative of Fire Service, reports Bangla Tribune.
The committee has been asked to submit its report by Tuesday, according to Upazila Nirbahi Officer Laiya Saiful.
Deputy Commissioner Kamrul Hassan said: “The families of six injured persons have been given Tk10,000 each. Others will get the same amount, or whatever is needed for their treatment.”
Earlier, Nangalkot police station OC Md Faruk Hossain said that they had not received any complaint over the incident.
“We did not know how Anwar made the gas… We have visited the spot,” he said.
Five people seriously injured in the blast were referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advance treatment on Friday. The five included cylinder owner Anwar, 35.
Twenty-two people had been admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital, and seven of them had been discharged already.
The incident took place at Birulia village under Moukara Union around 6pm on Thursday, but the injuries sustained varied depending on their proximity to the cylinder.
At that time, Anwar was inflating balloons by connecting them to the gas cylinder, which resulted in the accident.
A mason by profession, Anwar would make inflating gas using a combination of chemicals, and blow up and sell balloons using that gas.
Alamgir, chairman of Moukara Union Parishad, said the “old and rusty” cylinder had been fragile. “After the incident, I heard it had cracks in three to four places and he (Anwar) had welded them.
“He was inflating balloons in his own backyard. There are 20-25 homes around his yard which house around 200 people. While he was blowing up balloons, around 50 people, including children, went there,” the UP chairman added.
