The Gazi Medical College Hospital recorded four deaths at its Covid-19 unit.

As many as 134 patients were receiving treatment at the unit. Of them, nine were in ICU and 11 in HDU, said its proprietor Gazi Mizanur Rahman.

Five more patients died at Khulna General Hospital’s coronavirus unit, said its spokesperson Dr Kazi Abu Rashed.

Seventy patients were taking treatment at the unit as of Tuesday morning, he said.

Meanwhile, the newly opened Covid unit at Khulna's Shahid Sheikh Abu Naser Specialized Hospital, where 45 patients have been admitted, reported no death in the last 24 hours.

In the same time period, 75 samples out of 182 tested in the rt-PCR laboratory of Khulna University tested positive, with a positivity rate of 42.21%.

Until Monday, 1,265 people died from Covid-19 and 62,034 cases were recorded in Khulna Division, which has recently become the virus hotspot, since the pandemic began in March last year.

The division logged its highest-ever daily deaths -- 51 -- reported in 24 hours between Sunday and Monday mornings.

Amid an alarming surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths over the past few weeks, Khulna division is now clamouring for oxygen.

While few hospitals in Khulna division have already run out of the life-saving gas, many other medical facilities are operating on the edge due to an acute shortage of oxygen.

During the past week, seven Covid-19 patients have died at Satkhira Medical College Hospital in Satkhira district due to the unavailability of oxygen. A probe was ordered into the deaths on June 30.
