Police yesterday filed a case against 250 people and arrested 3 persons over clashes which broke out between hawkers and police in Narayanganj town on Tuesday evening.

Additional Superintendent of Police Mehedi Imran Siddiqui told Dhaka Tribune about the matter in the afternoon.

The clashes ensued when the hawkers staged demonstrations at several places of the town to protest their eviction and the detention of their leader Asaduzzmaan.

Policemen chased them in a bid to break up their demonstration when they set fire on the roads.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Narayanganj Suvash Chandra Saha confirmed the matter on Tuesday.

He said, “The hawkers have been protesting for the last several days demanding permission to conduct business on the streets.

Police barred them when they brought out a protest rally in the afternoon. Their leader Asad was detained at that moment.”

“After spreading the information about Asad’s detention, the hawkers took to the streets and staged demonstrations and engaging in arson. Police then chased them to disperse the protest, leaving several people injured.

“Later, police managed to douse the fire and restore normal  vehicular movement on the roads. Hawkers will not be allowed to occupy the footpath and obstruct the movement of traffic in any way,” he said.
