Raju, 10, a fifth-grader child has reportedly been severely hacked by his mother in Sarkerpara village of Sadar upazila, Nilphamari.

The incident took place around 9pm on Friday, sources say.

The accused, Renu Begum, tied the child up with ropes, tried to cut his leg off and later applied spices on the wound to intensify his pain, sources said.

Not only did the child sustain an inch deep injury below his knee, but the accused Renu also applied chilli flakes and salt over the severed knee to punish him, locals said.

When Raju screamed in pain, Mofeza Begum, the child’s aunt rushed in and rescued the child. He was promptly taken to a village doctor and got seven stitches, said Khalilur Rahman, father of the child.

“The incident was brutal and inhuman. I divorced Renu immediately after the incident.”

When asked, the accused and mother of the child Renu, said: “I asked Raju to come home before sunset but he returned late anyway. I got angry and punished Raju to teach him a lesson.”

“However, I realised that the punishment was a bit too much and I promise it would not happen again,” said the mother.

The child was continuing his studies in Dinajpur at his uncle’s house and came to his parent’s house to celebrate the upcoming Eid festivals, locals say.

Contacted, Sadar police station OC Mominul Islam said: “We did not receive any complaint yet. We will surely act on the matter after a complaint is received.”
