Ex-Psychiatry Chief of SOMCH dies of Covid-19

Gopal Shankar, who was a 12th batch student of SOMCH, breathed his last at 9 pm while undergoing treatment at Mount Adora Hospital in the city

Former head of the Psychiatry Department at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital (SOMCH) Dr Gopal Shankar Dey died of Covid-19 at a hospital in Sylhet on Saturday.

Gopal Shankar, who was a 12th batch student of SOMCH, breathed his last at 9 pm while undergoing treatment at Mount Adora Hospital in the city.

Niranjan De Jadu, a relative of the doctor and a prominent Sylhet-based documentary maker confirmed the news at night.

Dr Aklaque Ahmed, assistant professor and   Himanshu Lal Roy, deputy director of the SOMCH, also confirmed the death.

They said Gopal Shankar Dey was admitted to Mount Edora Hospital a few days ago with coronavirus symptoms. Later he was identified to  be coronavirus positive. 

Earlier, another doctor in Sylhet, Associate Professor Sylhet Osmani Medical College, Dr Moin Uddin died of coronavirus. He was the first doctor in the country to die in COVID-19 infection.
