An imam of a mosque in Sonagazi, Feni, has been allegedly suspended by the mosque authority after helping in burials of suspected Covid-19 patients.
The suspended man, Maolana Md Noor Ullah, was serving as an Imam (who leads Islamic worship services) at the Boxali Bhuiyan Bari Jame Masjid for the last six years and was suspended on Friday, sources say.
“I am a volunteer of the Islamic Foundation of the district and it is my duty to offer proper burials to people,” said Maolana Md Noor Ullah.
“On June 17, when a body of a suspected Covid-19 patient arrived, I with other volunteers assisted the family to give a proper burial to the person, maintaining all health protocols,” he added.
“Yet, when I went to lead the Jummah prayer at the mosque on Friday noon, I was informed that I had been temporarily suspended from my duty and was forced to leave the mosque premises,” the Maolana further added.
Asked about the incident, Sakhawat Hossain, president of the mosque committee, denied the allegations and said: “We have temporarily suspended Maolana Noor because he did not seek our permission before handling the matter on his own.”
