Police on Monday arrested two men, one of them a village arbitrator, over their alleged torture of a 16-year-old boy in Jalalia Madrasah area of Lakshmipur municipality on Saturday.
The victim, Nirob Hossain, 16 --an orphan boy--is an office assistant at the local leather shop. The teenager had been accused of theft by the men.
Claiming that Nirob had stolen their money, the shop owner Rashed and his employees along with some locals tied him to an electric pole, tortured him and later made him walk through the locality with a garland of shoes and brooms.
He was also fined Tk30,000 and as his family was unable to pay the money, he suffered repeated humiliation and torture at the behest of a village arbitration hearing, his family sources have said.
Later, acting on a case filed by the victim's grandmother, police arrested the shop owner Rashed and the village arbiter Ismail on Monday, say OC Mosleh Uddin.
He said:"They came to the police station with the boy. But they took back the minor and affirmed us that they will organise a legit arbitration meeting and solve the matter mutually."
"But later we found out about the torture and arrested the two upon filing of the case," the OC added.
The injured teenager is undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital.
The incident came to light when video footage of the assault went viral via Facebook and raised concerns among people.
