In order to ensure safety and security to the residential students, Chittagong University (CU) authorities  have decided to install CCTV cameras at all of its 12 halls.

The decision was taken during a provost committee meeting, held at the Vice Chancellor's office on 10 October, according to a press release, signed by CU deputy registrar (Information) .

The meeting was presided over by CU acting Vice Chancellor Shireen Akhtar.

During the meeting, provosts of all residential halls have also been told to stay on campus full time, so that they can find and sort out problems faced by the students.

When contacted, Rezaul Karim, CU assistant proctor said: ''We are undertaking this initiative to ensure the safety, and security of the students residing in the halls . We are hopeful that installation of CCTV cameras will start before the upcoming admission test.''

Jakir Hossain, professor of law department, and  the president of CU Teachers' Association said: This initiative would not stop crimes at the campus completely , but would decrease the number of untoward situations.

Praising the initiatives, Dewan Tahmid, a 4th year student of the Economics department at CU said: This is a wise decision, and it should have been done a long time ago, as clashes among student organisations of different political parties, and crimes take place on the campus regularly.''
