Teachers, guardians, students, rights organizations, and eminent personalities condemned the killing of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student, Abrar Fahad.

Teachers, guardians, and students said that Abrar’s murder is the legacy of criminal politics practiced for long time by Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal, the student wing of Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party [BNP].

ZobaidaNasrin, a Dhaka University teacher, said: “There are torture cells in every residential hall. When I tell this to my fellow teachers, they say I am lying. I am a residential teacher of a hall. Chhatra League forced a student out of hall blaming him to be a [IslamiChhatra] Shibir activist. When I asked the reason behind it, they said that they will file a case against me under 57 section. They said: ``I am sheltering Shibir activists.”

She made the statement at an assembly against killing of Abrar Fahad at Dhaka University (DU) premises on Wednesday.

Professor Anu Muhammad of Jahangirnagar University said: “Manyf such incidents happened before Abrar’s killing. Who gave the authority to Chhatra League to do this? Do Chhatra League leaders have the answers? Awami League leaders said that nothing happens without the instruction of prime minister.”

Eminent citizens issue statement

Political parties completely failed to control their activists, student and youth wing, said some eminent citizens in a statement issued jointly.

“Political parties have completely failed to control their students, youths and party activists,” it said adding: “Not only that, it is now clear to everyone as to what happens if political parties are formed based only on muscle power instead of any ideology.”

The whole nation is immersed in deepest anxiety and infinite pain. Incredible patterns of corruption, social indecency and drug business of Jubo League, disappointed and distressed us, reads the statement.

Prof Emeritus Anisuzzaman, Abdul Gaffar Choudhury, Syed Hasan Imam, Hasan AzizulHaque, Anupam Sen, Sarwar Ali, RamenduMajumdar, FerdoushiMazumdar, Mamunur Rashid, MofidulHaque, and NasiruddinYousuff issued the statement.

Odhikar condemns Abrar’s murder

Odhikar strongly condemned the killing of Abrar Fahad and expressed concern over the situation of lawlessness and culture of fear.

The murder of Abrar Fahad has once again highlighted the deplorable condition of human rights in Bangladesh, including the continuous violation of freedom of expression. Such killings and other human rights violations occur when a culture of impunity is allowed to flourish and there is neither redress nor rule of law, reads a press release.

A government that represents the people was not established in the country, as people were deprived to exercise their right to franchise in the 2014 and 2018 Parliamentary elections; and even the local level elections were controlled, Odhikar said.

This has given the government the opportunity to suppress all dissent through enactment and enforcement of repressive laws and use the law enforcement and political goons against the people on a massive scale.
