A mentally challenged woman has been beaten, and tortured while being tied to a tree, as locals suspected her to be a child-abduction.
The incident took place in Madaripur district's Dhurail union around 12pm on Monday.
Locals, suspecting the woman to be a kidnapper, tied her to a tree, and tortured her until the police intervened.
The identity of the victim could not be ascertained.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Madaripur Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Badrul Alam Mollah said: "We responded as soon as we were notified regarding the incident, and rescued the victim.
"Locals suspected the woman to be a child-lifter due to her incoherent, and incompatible replies when asked about her identity, and her purpose of being there."
"We have let the victim go as she is mentally challenged. We have strengthened our monitoring program to prevent such incidents from happening again," he added.
