Eight people, including three policemen, were injured as two factions of ruling Awami League engaged in a clash over establishing supremacy in Lalkhan Bazar area of Chittagong yesterday.
There had been longstanding feud between the followers of Didarul Alam Masum, secretary of Awami League's local ward unit, and Abul Hasnat Belal, a leader of Shechha Shebok League's local unit, over establishing supremacy in the area, said Sub-Inspector Nurul Absar of Khulshi Police Station.
Two factions engaged in a conflict last evening and exchanged fire that left five people injured critically, reports UNB.
Later, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control by firing bullets and teargas, said Pronob Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station.
All the injured except one sustained bullet injury. They -- Monir Hossain, Sohel, Suman, and Emon, were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
However, two leaders blamed each other for the conflict. There is fear prevailing of further clashes between their followers.
