Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin on Monday said that 22 CCTV cameras were being installed at the port city's main Eid jamaat (congregation) on the premises of the Jamiatul Falah Mosque.

While inspecting congregation preparations at the mosque premises, Nasir said: "Foolproof security measures have been taken for the Eid jamaat. The CCTV [closed-circuit television] cameras will be monitored by the Chittagong Metropolitan Police."

He informed that the CCC is prepared for this year's Eid jamaat considering the unfavourable weather forecast and erected a tarpaulin canopy as a precautionary measure.

"We are hopeful that the people will be able to offer Eid prayers without any difficulty," the mayor said, adding that a total of 120 electric fans had also been set up at the Eidgah Maidan.

The CCC has arranged a total of 164 Eid congregations on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr in its 41 wards under the supervision of the ward councillors concerned.

Two grand Eid congregations will be held at the Jamiatul Falah Complex Mosque, at 8am and 9am, respectively.

CMP chief says no security threat in port city

There is no specific security threat in Chittagong centering Eid-ul-Fitr, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Mahabubur Rahman said yesterday.

The CMP commissioner said this while talking to reporters after inspecting the Jamiatul Falah Eidgah Maidan, adding: “We have taken security measures keeping in mind the terrorist attack carried out at the Sholakia Eidgah Maidan a few years back. Although there are no specific threats this time, we are fully prepared to combat any."

Mahabubur added that their specialized teams SWAT, Quick Response Team and Bomb Disposal Units will remain stationed adjacent to the Eidgah Maidan.

"People will enter the Eidgah Maidan through the gates and nobody will be allowed to enter without going through the mandatory security check," he said, requesting people not to carry anything except umbrellas and prayer mats to the congregation.

"We have installed two watch towers, for the first time, at the Eidgah Maidan," the CMP Commissioner stated.
