Kamal added that the problem had been created due to recruitment of excessive workers and low income. The whole city has turned into a garbage dump as over 2,000 workers enforced the strike on March 27. The city produces some 1,000 tonnes of waste every day. Sunday’s meeting was also attended by 40 ward councillors, police officials, and representatives of the district administration and civil society.

The regular staff demanded five months’ due salaries and provident funds for 32 months, while the contractual workers demanded that the authorities pay their three months’ due wages immediately.
The protesting employees started work abstention on March 21, but later announced an indefinite strike as the authorities failed to meet their demands.
