The Department of Environment (DoE) has fined Karnaphuli Dry Dock Tk 1 crore for polluting the environment and operating without an Environment Clearance Certificate.
DoE Director (Chittagong region) Moazzam Hossain who imposed the fine, said Karnaphuli Dry Dock constructs vessels on 10,000 sq ft without a permit.
“The enterprise is causing serious ecological damage to the Karnaphuli river and the bio-diversity of the surrounding areas."
Moazzam Hossain said the fine was imposed after the damage was assessed. The errant enterprise was asked to pay damages of Tk 1 crore by June 12. “Otherwise, necessary legal action will be taken."
