Another Bangladeshi shot dead in South Africa

There have been several recent cases of Bangladeshi businessmen being gunned down by unknown miscreants in South Africa

A Bangladeshi national has been gunned down by unidentified miscreants in South Africa. 

The incident occurred in Newcastle, the third-largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, around 1am on May 8. 

The deceased is Joynal Abedin, 30, son of Rustom Ali, from Terkee village in Kalihati upazila, Tangail.

According to the victim's family, Joynal had been running a grocery business in a rented shop in Newcastle. He lived in a container beside his grocery. He left for South Africa 10 years ago after passing his HSC exam.

On May 8, he was reportedly asleep when he heard someone calling him. As he peeped through the window a group of miscreants shot him on the left side of his head.

He died on the spot.

Confirming the incident, Union Council Chairman of Sahadebpur in Kalihati Upazila Masudur Rahman said: “We will talk to authorities concerned to take necessary steps to bring his body as soon as possible.”

According to the victim’s uncle, the murderer might know Abedin in person. Abedin had called his family the evening of his murder and informed them of his plans to move to Canada. He had also informed them of his savings worth Tk20 lakh, and his plans to send home some money, selling his shop and car. He had plans of coming home on Eid. That very night he was shot dead.

In 2015, his younger brother Amin, 25, was found dead in the Buriganga river in Bangladesh.

There have been several recent reports of Bangladeshi businessmen being gunned down by unknown miscreants in South Africa: Rezaul Karim of Feni, Shahjahan Saju of Comilla and Firoz alias Shimul of Tangail have all been killed in the last two months.
