Unidentified assailants posing as law enforcement officials chased and shot dead a 23-year-old college student in front of his father after entering his home in Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat on Thursday afternoon.
The dead, Amir Hamza, was killed shortly after 4:00pm in Shibpur village when a group of armed assailants arrived on motorcycles and stormed into the house, witnesses said.
Amir Hamza, son of Ruhul Amin Munshi of Shibpur village, was a first-year honours student at Khulna Government Sundarban College and also worked at a diagnostic centre in Khulna.
According to police and family members, Hamza was speaking with his father and uncle in the courtyard when six men riding motorbike entered the premises, identifying themselves as officials and began chasing him.
He tried to flee but fell near a canal beside the house. The assailants then shot him in the head at close range, ensuring his death before fleeing the scene.
Officer-in-Charge of Chitalmari Police Station, Md Nazrul Islam, said police rushed to the scene upon receiving information and brought the situation under control. The body was recovered and sent to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved.
