A man was shot dead in Khulna’s Rupsa upazila on Monday evening, 50 days after his son was shot and hacked to death in the same area.
The deceased was identified as Aktar Dhali, 64, of Durjani Mahal village under Aichgati union. The incident occurred around 6:45pm, when Aktar was sitting on a bench beside the road in front of his house.
Family members said they suddenly heard gunshots and came outside to find Aktar lying beside the bench. Unidentified assailants had shot him before fleeing the scene.
Doctors at Khulna Medical College Hospital declared him dead after he was taken there.
Murad Hossain, an emergency department staff member at Khulna Medical College Hospital, said Aktar had been shot in his right shoulder. He may also have sustained injuries from shotgun pellets.
Rupsa Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Zahid said: “Police have been sent to the place where Aktar Dhali was shot. We are investigating who carried out the incident and why. The body is being processed for autopsy.”
He said: “Police have started investigating to identify and arrest those involved in the killing. We will also examine whether there is any connection between the 2 killings.”
Aktar’s son Joy Dhali, 27, was shot and hacked to death in the same area on August 15.
Police said a group of 4-5 people attacked Joy in front of Durjani Mahal in the Shaheed Mor area of Rupsa around 8:30pm that day. The helmeted assailants arrived on motorcycles and hacked him, killing him at the scene before fleeing on motorcycles.
The killing of Aktar triggered panic among local residents, while senior police officials visited the scene after receiving the news.
The body is being processed for autopsy, and police are investigating the killing and the possible connection between the 2 incidents.
