A man shot dead by assailants in Dhaka’s New Market area on Tuesday night has been identified as Khondoker Nayeem Ahmed Titon, a listed top terror suspect.

He was the son of KM Fakhruddin of Sultan Ganj in Jigatola, Hazaribagh, police said.

Sub-Inspector Md Shahadat Hossain of New Market Police Station confirmed the identity, saying the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) identified him through fingerprint analysis. Efforts are underway to gather further details about him.

DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam said Titon was taken to hospital after being shot, where doctors declared him dead.

He added that Titon was the second accused on a list of 23 top terror suspects published in 2001. He had spent a long period in jail and was released on bail on August 13, following August 5. Since then, he had been absconding.

“We believe the killing may have been carried out by members of the underworld. However, we have yet to identify those responsible,” the official said.

The shooting took place around 8pm near the Shah Newaz Hall area in New Market.

Witnesses said two assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire indiscriminately, leaving Titon critically injured on the road before fleeing the scene as locals gave chase.

Md Mezbah Rahman, who helped take the victim to hospital, said the attackers were wearing caps and masks.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the body bore multiple bullet wounds, including to the head. The body has been kept at the morgue.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (New Market Zone) Md Nasim A Gulshan said police have visited the scene and are collecting CCTV footage from the surrounding area.
