A gang of culprits has blasted multiple improvised bombs in front of the Burichang upazila Awami League office in Comilla. The incident occurred around 10:45am on Saturday.
The miscreants fled the area after the sound of an explosion attracted the attention of night guards and locals present in the area.
Police later arrived at the scene and seized eight devices which appeared to be improvised bombs and petrol bombs, confirmed Burichang police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Akul Chandra Biswas.
According to police and local ruling party leaders, a number of culprits torched a tire in front of the Awami League upazila office on Saturday night. They also blasted a number of improvised bombs, spreading panic and terror in the surrounding area.
While the night guards approached the scene of the explosion, the miscreants made their escape.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, upazila Awami League General Secretary Sazzad Hossain said: “The verdict for the 21 August grenade attack is set to be delivered on October 10.
“A faction of BNP-Jamaat supporters could have exploded improvised bombs to incite terror centering on the upcoming announcement of the verdict. I strongly urge the authorities to arrest those involved with the incident.”
Meanwhile, OC Akul Chandra Biswas said: “The bomb squad will be able to identify the seized devices, which appear to be improvised bombs and petrol bombs. Police have launched a drive to arrest those responsible for blasting the bombs in front of the Awami League office.”
