Bus driver of Natore bus crash arrested in Bogra

Eyewitnesses said the man gave himself up

The Challenger Paribahan bus driver involved in the recent bus accident in Natore’s Lalpur upazila, that left 15 dead and several injured, has been arrested in Bogra.

Shamim Hossain, 42, was arrested by the Bogra Detective Branch (DB) of police from the town’s Station Road around 2:15 pm on Tuesday, and is to be handed over to the investigation officer of the case.

Eyewitnesses said the man gave himself up.

Bogra DB Police Inspector Noor-e-Alam Siddiqui, and others, said Shamim is from Joypurhat’s Khetlal upazila, and currently lives in Bogra town. He is one of the suspects for the accident on the Pabna-Natore highway on Saturday, where his bus collided head-on with a human hauler, leaving 15 dead and over 20 injured.

Natore’s Bonpara Highway police station Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Yousuf Ali, filed a case with Lalpur police station against seven people in this regard: Javed Mollah of the Bonpara Human Hauler Owners’ Association, its General Secretary, Zakir Hossain, Shahadat Hossain, owner of the human hauler involved in the accident, deceased driver Amir Hossain, the unidentified helper of the vehicle who also died, Challenger Paribahan owner, Manju Sarker, and bus driver, Shamim Hossain.

On Sunday, Bogra Sadar police station Inspector, Sheikh Farid Uddin, detained the bus’ helper, Abdus Samad. 

Police also arrested Manju Sarker, but he was released shortly afterwards for unknown reasons upon instructions from higher officials. He has since gone into hiding, with his phone being used by associates.

On Monday, the Prime Minister's Office issued a directive asking the authorities concerned to immediately bring those responsible for road accidents during the Eid-ul-Azha vacations to book.
