A police member’s mother and wife were killed after a truck hit them while they were crossing a road in Dhaka’s Purbachal 300-ft area around 10pm on Friday.
The truck fled the scene after the incident, and police are working to identify it. The deceased were Afroza Akter Shanta, 28, and the mother of police member Mehedi Hasan.
Mehedi Hasan said his mother and wife were crossing the road together when the truck hit them. They were rescued and taken to the emergency department of Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared his mother dead.
Afroza, who was critically injured, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced treatment. She died while undergoing treatment at around 3:30am on Saturday.
Mehedi said their home is in the Sridhara area under Kadamtoli police station in Dhaka. His father, Azizul Haque, is a sub-inspector (SI) at Dhaka City Special Branch.
Inspector Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said, quoting doctors, that another woman had died at Kurmitola General Hospital in the incident. He said Afroza Akter Shanta was later taken to DMCH, where she died while undergoing treatment, and her body was handed over to the family without an autopsy.
Sohrab Hossain, officer-in-charge of Khilkhet police station, said police went to the scene after receiving the news but found no vehicle there.
He said: “CCTV footage from the scene is being collected to identify the truck involved.”
A case filed by police is under process in connection with the incident.
